Meet Cali, Our Adventure Dog Golden Retriever Pup

Meet our new adventurer ~ Cali

She was born on December 21, 2016. She will be our family dog at home, and in the field, she will accompany my wife and/or me on fishing, hiking and camping trips, and she will be my bird hunting dog.

Choosing a name is never an easy process and with three women in our household, I’m used to being outnumbered in votes. Here’s how we agreed on the name Cali;

Me: In Greek mythology Cali was an Arcadian who transformed into a she-bear, then into the Great Bear constellation.

My teenagers daughters: it’s short for California

My wife: Cali also means “most beautiful”

We are looking forward to lots of adventures in 2017 with our new pup.

    I recently started watching your videos on building your log cabin. I find them very interesting ,perhaps, for the same reason most people find them interesting . What really caught my attention was the presence of your Golden Retriever Cali. Besides being very beautiful, I am reminded of my Golden, Ruby . We got her in 2001 and was blessed with her for 14 wonderful years. I live in southeastern New Hampshire adjacent to a large expanse of forest. Every day of her life was spent walking and exploring those woods. When I see you and your Cali I am reminded of my relationship with Ruby. It tugs at my heart but I see true beauty ,love and loyalty. A man and his dog is truly a wonder to behold. I wish you a very long and joyous life together for it is truly precious .
    I hope to continue watching your videos and to watch your construction of your log cabin and continue to see that beautiful Golden Cali.

    Hello Shawn, I only discovered yesterday your “Man Builds Off Grid Log Cabin Alone in the Canadian Wilderness”. So fabulous and interesting to watch – your energy, know how, precision, speedy calculations, artistic ideas and speed with which you get the various jobs done, and right from scratch. Thoroughly enjoyable, and with lovely interaction with Cali. Great cabin stove, and clever little cooker that you used on ‘picnic day out’ with your wife in the snow. I particularly enjoyed watching without having the distraction of a running commentary! Your reflections, cooking skills and great photography of such magnificent nature, are truly appreciated.

    I apologize if you’ve mentioned this elsewhere, but would you mind sharing the name/location of Cali’s breeder? She is stunning! Thank you for the great videos, our whole family lives them!

    Shawn – I have been watching your videos for several months, as much for Cali, as you. In the last nights episode you prepared eggs, ham and asparagus in your outdoor kitchen and after eating your meal gave Cali one of the eggs and piece of ham. I was reminded of a fond memory with my Golden – his name was Davey. Some friends, my wife and I were going up to The North Carolina mountains for a day trip and of course, Davey was with us. We had stopped at a local restaurant to have breakfast and after finishing I ordered a breakfast of eggs, bacon and potatoes in a ‘To Go’ container – which was met with puzzled looks. After paying and walking out to my truck they realized what I was doing. I dropped the tailgate and sat down with Davey while he enjoyed his breakfast. The restaurant had large picture windows across the front and I could see people watching us and the amazed looks, thumbs up and even some applauded. I wanted to share that brief story so you would understand one of the reasons I watch and fond memories I relive.
    Keep up the great work and videos – my wife and I look forward to each one.

    We have been watching your videos on YouTube for about 2 weeks now! Can’t get enough of them. We’re learning a lot from them. We are outdoor type of people too! We truly love your precious companion, Cali! She’s so sweet and we notice she seems very smart! Always by your side too! I see your very self determined as my husband is the same way as you! When we camp and do things outdoors we rely solely on doing things simple without the modern amenities in life. Thanks so much for your videos and blogs! Very informative and you’re teaching us a whole lot on being self reliant in life! Looking forward to your continuance of videos & blogs! The Hernandez Family

    I just discovered your you tube channel about 2 weeks ago and now I am addicted. I love watching the beautiful things that you are able to create. You are very blessed and a very hard working man. I love your dog, Cali, as everyone who watches does. How could you not love her. I love watching her expressions and the interaction between the two of you. I wish I had been able to do something like what you are doing many years ago. I am 73 now so, a little late to start. I hope your wife is able to adjust and learns to love it as least a fraction of how much you love it. Thank you so much for the wonderful videos and life lessons.

    I love your films so much I don’t think I can get along without them. They are an escape into the REAL world of nature, and what seems to resonate with my soul. I wish I could do all these things. I do wonder if there will be some changes in the future such as a more powerful solar grid? I feel such
    peace after watching a show. I’m so glad you are such a clear and logical thinker and your voice is calm. It is like your personality is in sync with the wilderness and every moment I feel peace. A wonderful healing show. I am in love with Cali. She is so cute and smart and full of love. Thank you so much.
