My Self Reliance

//My Self Reliance

This is the story of my journey to self reliance and inspiration for you to achieve self reliance in your life.

Wild Game Meat for Self Reliance

Your self reliance is substantially measured by your ability to source healthy, readily available and economical food that has little or minimal impact on the environment and, ideally, does not consume a lot of your time and energy to acquire.  Wild-crafted foods can be an ideal method to accomplish this, with the not-insignificant benefit of the reconnection and participation in nature and it’s natural cycles.  Maintaining this connection is critical, in my opinion, to mitigate the effects of nature deficit disorder, and to remind us that our independence is actually critically tied to our dependence on nature in all of [...]

Duck Killed By Power Line – A Small Symptom of Our Addiction to Energy

Today while out duck hunting, I witnessed something I have not seen happen in many years.  A small flock of Lesser Scaup diving ducks flew past me, high and well out of range, and headed for the open water of Georgian Bay.  Suddenly, the entire flock flared upwards as they passed through the hydro transmission corridor, and one bird struck an electrical line and plunged to the water below.  I paddled over and plucked it from the water.  It was obvious that its back and wing were broken, and that it had died instantly.  Never one to turn down a free meal [...]

What is Self-reliance?

Self Reliance is defined by The Free Dictionary as the “Reliance on one’s own capabilities, judgment, or resources; independence”. Most searches of the term “self-reliance” on the Internet also return this description; “Self-Reliance is an essay written by American transcendentalist philosopher and essayist Ralph Waldo Emerson.” In his notorious essay, written in 1841, Emerson himself defined self-reliance as “the need for each individual to avoid conformity and false consistency, and follow his or her own instincts and ideas”. One of Emerson’s most famous quotations went like this, “A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds, adored by little statesmen [...]

My Off Grid Log Cabin: The Opportunity and the Beginning

It was early September and it was becoming obvious that in order to live comfortably on my five and a half acres of forest and field in central Ontario for the next twelve months, I would have to build a solid cabin.  My budget was basically zero, but I needed a permanent shelter from the rain and clouds of incessant biting insects of spring and summer, and from the bitter cold of a Canadian winter. I was in my early twenties and I was excited to find myself in a position to fulfill my childhood dream of moving off-grid. I had the ambition, strength, the land and some basic knowledge [...]

Two Little Savages: My Favourite Outdoors Book

My favourite book as a young boy was "Two Little Savages: Being the Adventures of Two Boys Who Lived as Indians and What They Learned ...", the inspiration for many of my early outdoor adventures.  Each day, I raced home from school, eager to sneak away to the woods to act out the exploits I had read the night before of Yan and his accomplices, who themselves were learning to live like the "Indians" that exemplified the lifestyle that he craved. I'm often asked, what or who inspired me to become such a passionate outdoorsman.  I always struggle with the [...]

Raising Livestock in the Suburbs – and not just backyard chickens

The Self Reliance Diet is what I call my family’s new way of eating and beef has a place in that plan, but what do you do if you want to raise livestock while living in the suburbs?  In another article, I talked about how many animals the average North American family of four consumes in a year, including beef, poultry, pork, game and fish.  What I didn’t talk in detail about was where to get that meat, and whether or not it makes sense to grow, raise, harvest and process it yourself on the scale required to feed your [...]
