Assessment & Getting Started

The Kitchen Table List

The most useful document I ever produced wasn't a business plan or a set of cabin drawings. It was a single honest list, written by hand, on one of the harder evenings of my life.

The most useful document I ever produced wasn't a business plan or a set of cabin drawings. It was a list my wife and I wrote at the kitchen table the year the roofing company came apart.

For the first time in years I wrote down everything I was carrying, every payment, every obligation, every commitment of money, time, and attention, all of it on one page where I could see it at once. It was one of the harder evenings of my life. It was also the evening things started to turn.

01

What I Didn't Know, Running a Ten Million Dollar Company

I'd run that company for years by then, and I could tell you the revenue to the dollar. What I couldn't tell you was what my own family actually spent in a month, or where the real weak points in our life were sitting.

That's a strange kind of blindness, and I don't think it's rare. Most people know their salary and have no real idea what their life actually costs to run. The business had my full attention. The household ran on assumption.

02

Write Down Everything, Change Nothing

The exercise itself isn't complicated, and that's part of what makes it hard. You take a notebook, or a single sheet of paper if that's all you have, and you write down everything, without organizing it and without filtering it.

Every place the money goes, the mortgage and the five dollar coffee both. Every recurring pull on your time, the commute, the obligations, the things that quietly fill a calendar. Every debt, every subscription, every promise that costs something to keep.

If a thing feels too small to write down, write it down anyway. The small things are usually where the truth is hiding.

The truth about your situation exists whether you write it down or not. Writing it down simply means you can finally start doing something about it.

03

Why the Second Page Is Where People Quit

Somewhere around the second page, most people want to stop. I certainly did, all those years ago. The numbers start telling a story you've worked hard not to see, and the hours don't add up the way you assumed, and a good portion of the life turns out to be spent servicing commitments nobody remembers agreeing to.

That discomfort isn't a sign the exercise is going wrong. It's the whole reason to do it. I'd avoided a clear look at my own numbers for years, because some part of me already suspected what the list would say, and avoiding it cost me a great deal more than facing it ever did.

04

The Rule That Makes It Work

The rule for a week like this is simple and harder than it sounds: change nothing yet. Once things are visible, the urge to start fixing them right away is strong, and I'd ask you to hold off on that.

A full stretch of pure observation gives you something a reactive fix never will, which is the complete picture, and the complete picture is what everything after it gets built on.

When I walk a piece of ground I'm thinking about working, I don't bring a chainsaw the first time. I bring my eyes and my patience, and I let the land tell me what's actually there before I touch anything. A life deserves the same respect before you start changing it.

05

The Evening Things Started to Turn

A year from now, whatever list you make will look like it was written by someone else. I've watched that happen enough times, in my own life and in other people's, to say it with real confidence.

But none of that is available to you yet. The only job right now is to look, honestly, at what you're already carrying, and write it down.

This Is Where the Book Starts Too

The kitchen table list above is Week One of fifty-two deliberate assignments in 52 Weeks to Self-Reliance: One Year of Deliberate Decisions to Take Back Your Time, Money, and Freedom. If an honest look at what you're carrying is overdue, the book walks you through it, one week at a time, in the right order, starting exactly here.
